I am a bit of a night owl and often see infomercials for the latest and greatest exercise machines - what have you tried and was it a success? Mollykate - you don't need to reply till your new cross trainer has been fixed - what a bummer  Irked

Quite like the look of an elliptical trainer - exercise top and bottom at the same time & no stress on your joints.

I also like the look of a Pilates machine that has a little trampoline at the bottom - though its appeal is probably more to do with the 53 year old presenter who has a beautiful, lean dancer's body and gorgeous long thick hair!

If you have a machine did you buy or rent it - any thoughts on that?

Maybe I should just go to bed earlier and I won't be tempted! Zzz Smurf Zzz

Thanks

Hi SD
WE have a treadmill and a home gym.  I have NEVER used the home gym, as it is a bloke sort of thing...I have used the treadmill (very sporadically I must confess) Angel
It is a great thing to have IF it gets used.  Ian uses it quite a bit though...and the boys occasionally too!  So all in all I think if you are disciplined enough (which you appear to be!!) then you will use it.  We purchased ours a while back, but perhaps renting it for a while would be good....then you can decide whether you LOVE it or not!!
Take care

Thanks for the info, Woody! (or is that a rude word in NZ??)

Am having a little chuckle that you think I am disciplined - you guys have got to know me on one of the few times when I have set a goal and actually got there - and that's not just with weight - my life is littered with things I meant to do but just didn't apply myself  Awww

We borrowed an exercycle when Mr SD had a knee operation - it was great for hanging clothes up on. Don't think we used it once and had to dust it to give it back  :D

Looked at a few rental options on the internet and have just realised that an elliptical trainer is the same as a cross-trainer - so molly-k - what made you choose that type of machine?

Because I thought it would be fun  Big Eyes It certainly seemed so in the shop. If the service guys ever get round to visiting me I might get to find out. I liked the idea of having something that worked top and bottom at the same time. I was looking at a rowing machine but realised I would probably get a sore neck trying to look up at the tv while on it  Doh At this point the cross trainer is just sitting in my bedroom and so far I have managed to resist the temptation to put clothes on it but it is getting harder  Awww

Old topic, I know.

We have a treadmill at home and I find it quite good.  You can't get away with going for a run in your pyjamas at the gym hehe  Tongue
Also, I live rurally so sometimes driving to a gym or the beach can be a bit demotivating.

We have a treadmill and a rowing machine gathering dust in the spare room!  Good for hanging things on...next step for them will be Trade Me.    I found the treadmill boring so it was on with the shoes, out with the dog lead and although I only managed a few minutes at first I found walking was the best thing...and cost nothing, just need a new pair of shoes each year Smile  Like you I am rural (have to watch out for milk tankers and other assorted vehicles) and dont have easy access to gyms etc.  Other best exercise for me is gardening, plenty of bending, digging, stretching....

Yeah, the machines definitely aren't for everyone.
I just like how everything is measured.  You have run this far, burnt this many calories. Perhaps a result of playing too many video games  Embarrassed
I imagine a pedometer would hold the same appeal for me.

I received Wii Fit Plus as a Christmas present.

Lots of fun things to do and the new version tells you how many calories you've burnt.  Also lots of variety with yoga, aerobics, muscle workouts, balance games etc.  And you get nice graphs showing you your progress (much like the WeighInOnline online weight loss system).

Yes the Wii fit plus is good for getting you up and off the couch, I just got the Wii active which I think is a better work out.

You have the option of a 30 day challenge of which I am on day three, so a way to go yet. The challenge is in three different levels so would give you something no matter if you were new to exercise or not. It has a leg band that you put the nuchuck in to help detect your movements and the trainer takes you through the whole thing. You have the option of using the board or not, although most of the exercises don't use the board at all anyway.

The exercises work you a bit harder and it has several workout options. I might get the active plus as well when I am finished with the current challenge.

The other thing I like a lot are some of the exercise DVDs although I am quite fussy about them.

Hmm, I have a Wii so I might scrimp some money together and get one of the fitness 'games' for it.  Cool

Yes I've seen several different Wii fitness games in my local Electronics Boutique.  The Wii Fit has quite cute graphics, and lets my Mii do the exercising, which I like.  The others look a bit more serious but I'm sure they do the job just as well.

Diamond: Do you have a video rental store near you?  If so then they usually rent out Wii games.  My local video store rents out the Wii balance board and Wii Fit, so you could try it out before spending your hard earned cash!

Yes it is a bit more serious, but still good. The Mii is more realistic, but still does the exercises with you. A bit less of a game aspect, but also a better work out.

Hadn't actually thought of hiring them, although we don't have that sort of thing around here, but I might have a look on fatso and see if they have them.

Good idea admin.

We have a Wii fit,  haven't used it for a while with 4yo GD living with us.  Like the idea of hiring other "games" to try them out.  We have made some big mistakes with kids games we thought would be good and were not our cup of tea.

Thanks for that, good idea. Smile
